How to make a Race-car-themed DIY Kids Dresser

1. Start with the Basics: Begin with a simple, plain dresser as your canvas. Look for one that’s the right size for your child’s room and has enough drawer space to store all their belongings.

2. Gather Your Materials: You’ll need the following materials for this project:

  • Dresser
  • Sandpaper
  • Primer
  • Red, black, and white paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Painter’s tape
  • Race car-themed decals or stickers
  • Clear topcoat sealer
  • Drawer knobs or handles (optional)

3. Prep and Prime: Sand the dresser’s surface lightly to create a smooth painting surface. Then, apply a coat of primer to help the paint adhere better. Allow it to dry completely.

4. Get Creative with Colors: Either simply replace the knobs with vibrant colored toy race cars glued onto screws, as is shown in the pictures.

…. or….paint the dresser in vibrant red for that classic race car look. You can use black and white paint for racing stripes and other detailing. Painter’s tape will help you achieve clean lines and sharp edges. Be sure to let each coat of paint dry thoroughly before applying the next.

5. Decals and Stickers: If you opted for the bright-colored dresser – with our without the white stripes -, instead of the race car knobs, you can enhance the race car theme by adding race car-themed decals or stickers. You can find these in various styles and sizes. Apply them to the dresser’s surface, strategically placing them for maximum impact. This step is where your creativity can truly shine.

6. Protect Your Masterpiece: Particularly if your paint job is your feature, be sure to add thisl ‘step’: once the paint and decals are dry, protect your masterpiece with a clear topcoat sealer. This will not only add a glossy finish but also protect the paint from wear and tear over time.

7. Dresser Hardware: Then, even if you went with that colorful striped dresser look, still consider replacing the dresser knobs or handles with race car-themed alternatives to complete the look. These small details can make a big difference in the overall theme.

8. Finishing Touches: After everything is dry and in place, it’s time to organize the dresser with your child’s clothing and accessories. Use drawer dividers or baskets to keep everything tidy.

How to make your own dresser knobs

  1. Collect toy cars or other objects of desire (one for each knob)
  2. Buy round-headed bolts with matching nuts (one for each knob)
  3. With (pillar) drill, drill holes through the toy cars. Tip: wecure the toy car in a bench vice before drilling with a normal drill so the drill won’t slip/you hurt yourself.
  4. Don’t have a drill? Use strong glue (e.g. Gorilla glue) instead, and glue each toy onto the bolt. Let the glue dry before attaching it to the dresser. Ensure it doesn’t leak onto something where you don’t want the glue…. (been there, done that…. ;-)
  5. Poke your new knobs through the handle holes in the dresser and secure with the nuts inside the dresser.

Creating a race car-themed DIY kids dresser is a fantastic way to bring excitement and personality to your child’s bedroom decor.

By following these steps, you can create a piece that not only delights your child but also drives traffic to your website. Incorporate SEO-friendly keywords like “race car-themed kids dresser” and “DIY kids room decor” in your online content to ensure that parents searching for creative bedroom ideas discover your project.

So, rev up the fun, get creative, and watch your child’s face light up as they enjoy their new, race car-inspired dresser.
